3-3-1: players and roles

The 3-3-1 notation describes the seven outfield players; the goalkeeper makes eight. This example places three players at the back, three in midfield and one up front. It is a starting point for explaining wide and central roles, not a required system for 8-a-side football.

GoalkeeperShirt no. 1
See the team’s shape from behind. When in possession, work out where the nearest defender can offer a short pass.
Three defendersShirt no. 2, 3, 4
Cover the centre and both sides. When one defender moves towards the ball, check how the other two protect the middle.
Three midfieldersShirt no. 5, 6, 7
Connect defence and attack. The wide players provide width while the central player stays close enough to combine with nearby teammates.
One forwardShirt no. 8
Offer a target ahead of the midfield. Try moving into positions where either wide midfielder can find a pass, rather than staying in one central spot.

What to check when adjusting the shape

Decide who provides width

If both wide midfielders come inside, there are fewer passing options out wide. Move the player on the far side a little wider and compare the options.

Keep the lines connected

Check the gaps between defenders, midfielders and the forward. The spacing in the diagram is illustrative; adjust it for your players and training area.

Explain the role to substitutes

Replace the example numbers with your squad’s numbers and describe both the position and task, such as wide midfielder or central defender.

Try it on the board

Set up a wide midfielder receiving the ball. Move the nearby defender, central midfielder and forward in turn to offer three passing options, then check the far-side midfielder’s position.
